III.Selected Compositions on The Little Prince
Love As a Child Does
27班光华管理学院 曾昭仪
“If you love a flower that lives on a star, it is sweet to look at the sky at night. All the stars are abloom with flowers.”
Thanks to the little prince, or rather, Saint Exupery, we can get such a brilliant and beautiful annotation of love. And it always feels good to hear such warm and sooth words in this bustling world nowadays.
When every newly-born child is kissed by God, he is vouchsafed a gift for loving. The one he loves can be anyone and anything, from his parents and the little blond girl living next door, to the grey-and-black-striped kitty and the flowers fully blooming in the sun. He is always, always willing to devote his time and care to them, regarding it as natural as sun rising in the east and setting in the west.
In some way, nothing can be as fortunate as loving someone or something with a devoted heart without considering whether it is worthwhile. But the tragedy is that most people grow up before realizing it. And what makes this tragedy even more tragic is that grown-ups gradually learn to pursue those so-called “matters of consequences,” mistaking the pursuing for love. See, the one they love is the one they should love.
From the perspective of the grown-ups, the rose doesn’t deserve the love from the little prince. He shouldn’t love her. What on earth can an ordinary rose bring to you, when you can buy a bunch easily with ten dollars or so, not to mention how capricious and picky a miss she is? And so it is with the fox. Will the color of the wheat fields really do any good to him, when there is no denying that the little prince will never return?
And what a miserable scene that is! Those grown-ups have already forgotten the providence given by God. They neglect that love shouldn’t be a matter of calculating what you will gain from it. It’s all about devoting your heart. Then what will you gain finally? Aren’t these good enough — you can tell the sound of someone’s footsteps from all the others; you may stare stars alone and perhaps titter, for they recall you someone’s eyes; you know it deeply in heart that there’s someone who is unique to you, and to whom you are unique, too.
Because of someone’s existence, the whole world of yours is transformed into a better place. And you will never regret having wasted so much time and care for the one you love, for lovers never calculate. They give each other everything, and then the only thing they need to do is to enjoy the happiness that, in their eyes, nothing can compare to.
Aren’t these, all of these, good enough?
So please tear down the label with the word “grown-up” on. Take a look at a naïve, or in other words, uneducated child, and see how he loves the grey-and-black-striped kitty or the flowers fully blooming in the sun. All you need to do is to love as a child does.
Life Is a Counterbalance between the Reality and the Dreams
-- The Little Prince in My Eyes
28 班 国际关系学院 陈静怡
Many people go into raptures at the mere mention of The Little Prince. They cannot help thinking of the naive world of children with glorious dreams and sighing time flies. Tears fell off from not only the author's eyes but the readers' as well when the little prince was dying. They said his death stood for the end of a naive era and purity was bound to perish.
I won't go that far. In my eyes, it seems that every adult is a child with a belly of sorrow. I cannot fully identify with the little prince's choice. Death is a dramatic, one-time crisis while living is a day-by-day, year-by-year confrontation with powerful external and internal forces, a bittersweet coming to terms with one's own love and one's life. One who cannot shield himself from the cruel reality is a failure. I want to point out that the little prince takes a vain pride in his so-called naive world and is left vulnerable to melancholy with continuously losing what he cherishes. His failure is due to his inability to adapt himself to the reality rather than juvenescence. He is too stubborn.
No one can deny the real world. We are brought up where we live and develop or even are imposed a set of ideas based on the local customs and cultures, and eventually feature the original with our own sign. To some extent, it is us who set up such a high performance world system which occasionally renders us frustrated. Also, it is our group to blame if there must be someone in charge of all the sorrow. So please, be a little bit more rational!
Still, keeping sensitive in the real world makes sense. The fox is quoted as saying “Now here is my secret. It is very simple. It is only with one's heart that one can see clearly. What is essential is invisible to the eye." Without such a heart, it is too easy to lose direction in the boundless universe which lacks too many limits already. Only continuing along this path, can you see the silver lining when deep in desperation.
We are not that fortunate to have an asteroid to escape for as the little prince. So why not try to enjoy our real world? It is not as bad as what the little prince imagined. What is concerned with in this story is not but how to deal with the reality and dreams. I think there should and could be a fabulous counterbalance between the two, that is, our attitude towards life. Guts, wisdom, goodness and tolerance are in need equally. Just tolerate and enjoy your life, then you can keep the fox even after losing your rose. Cherish the present instead of the past—that is what I learn from the little prince's sad story. What about you?
